Honeymoon couple visiting Boulders Beach near the African penguin colony in Cape Town

There are moments on a private Cape Peninsula tour that will always stay with you. For this lovely honeymoon couple from the USA, meeting the African Penguins at Boulders Beach was one of those special times.

Set beside the clear waters and ancient granite boulders of False Bay, Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is home to one of the world’s best-known land-based African Penguin colonies. It’s a place where a simple stroll along the boardwalk can reveal extraordinary surprises: a penguin waddling between the rocks, a pair calling to each other, or a curious bird pausing only a few metres away.

A penguin found nowhere else

The African Penguin is the only penguin species that breeds naturally on this continent. Its distinctive black and white plumage provides camouflage in the sea: viewed from above the penguin’s black back blends into the dark water beneath, but from below its white belly merges with the bright sunlight filtering through from the surface. The pattern of spots across the penguin’s chest is unique to each bird - rather like a human fingerprint.

They are also wonderfully social birds. Breeding pairs often return to the same colony and recognise one another by their distinctive calls. Their loud, braying voice once earned them the nickname “jackass penguin,” although the more dignified “African Penguin” is now the preferred name.

The Boulders Beach experience

Boulders lies within Table Mountain National Park, between Simon’s Town and Cape Point. Wooden boardwalks lead through coastal vegetation to Foxy Beach, where visitors can observe the colony without disturbing sensitive nesting areas. The protected setting allows the penguins to move naturally among their burrows, the beach and the sea.

Every visit is different. On our recent private tour for the honeymooners, we watched penguins resting on the sand, standing guard among the boulders and moving confidently through the shallow water. The couple’s delight was immediate, reminding us why Boulders is such a special stop for first-time and returning visitors alike.

Why these penguins need our help

Behind the charm is an urgent conservation story. The African Penguin was uplisted to globally Critically Endangered in October 2024. BirdLife South Africa reports that fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs remained in 2023, following a dramatic long-term decline.

A shortage of their preferred food, particularly sardines and anchovies, is a major pressure, together with multiple other factors including climate change, habitat disturbance, pollution, oil spills and disease. Conservation organisations, scientists and park teams continue to monitor colonies, protect nesting sites and raise awareness to give the birds’ their best chance of survival.

Responsible visits matter

Visitors can help by staying on the boardwalks, keeping a respectful distance and never touching or feeding the penguins. These are wild animals with sharp beaks, and giving them space reduces stress—especially around nests and chicks. Follow SANParks guidance, keep the area clean and avoid blocking the penguins’ routes to and from the sea.

Photography is part of the experience, but the best images come from patience rather than getting closer. A zoom lens and a quiet moment often reveal more natural penguin behaviour than a hurried selfie.
